Abstract

The late Tertiary Coso Formation consists of sedimentary and volcaniclastic rocks that are exposed in the Coso Range and at the south end of Owens Valley, California. A predominance of lacustrine facies in the lowest part of the formation records the existence of a basin at the south end of Owens Valley, and the occurrences of coarse clastic facies in the upper part of the formation apparently record the onset of Basin and Range block faulting. Potassium-argon ages of volcanic rocks that overlie, are intercalated with, and intrude the Coso Formation indicate that the formation ranges from more than 2.5 to at least 6.0 m.y. old.--From New Publications of the Geological Survey, July 1982.
