Abstract
The Mount Massive Wilderness is about 7 mi west of Leadville in the west-central part of Colorado. The Mount Massive Wilderness consists of about 40 (super 2) mi of rugged, mountainous terrain along the continental divide in the Sawatch Range. This wilderness is underlain almost entirely by metamorphic and igneous rocks of early and middle Proterozoic age and minor amounts of igneous rock intruded during Late Cretaceous and mid-Tertiary time. No mineral resources were identified within the wilderness, although they are present in adjacent mining districts. The southwestern part of this wilderness has a high mineral resource potential for undiscovered vein deposits of gold, silver, lead, and zinc, and areas near the north and south boundaries have a moderate resource potential for undiscovered molybdenum in stockwork deposits. The potential for other mineral resources is low. This area has no potential for energy resources.
