Abstract
One of the major processes for removal bacteria from seeping water during soil passage is adsorption. Microcosm study was carried out on 8 ferralitic soil horizons (H (sub 1) -H (sub 8) ) separating the soil surface from the underground water table, in the equatorial region in Cameroon. It aimed in assess the soil particles adsorption potentials for S. faecalis. It resulted that bacterial sorption on soil particles occurs swiftly during the first 30 minutes of incubation of aqueous medium containing bacteria and soil particles. By application of Freundlich isotherms, it is noted that soil horizons adsorption coefficient which is a measure of the adsorption capacity vary from 3 to 27632 adsorbed cells.mg (super -1) of soil particles. Although no gradient of adsorption potential has been observed amongst horizons, the adsorption is relatively weak at horizons H (sub 4) and H (sub 5) which are located near the middle of soil column. The adsorption is relatively pronounced at the upper horizon H (sub 3) and the deeper horizon H (sub 7) . The linearity coefficient inversely proportional to the adsorption intensity vary from 0,4483 to 2,2123 with greatest values related to horizons H (sub 2) to H (sub 5) , and lowest values related to horizons H (sub 7) and H (sub 8) . The variability of soil horizon adsorption potentials would be due to the variability of bacterial fixation sites properties located at soil particle surfaces. It seems convenient to carry out other experiments with several cell species together in order to predict the interactions nature among bacterial cells for the attach sites or group of sites on soil surface particles.
